Start by copying the music files to each computer (either over a network, if your computers are networked, or by burning the music files onto CDs or DVDs – you can use a CD-RW or DVD-RW disc for this to save plastic). If you don’t know where the files are, use “Get Info” on one of them, and at the bottom of the Summary Tab, you’ll see “Where:” and a list of folders. Your music is inside of those folders, so you’ll need to copy (not move or cut) the songs from those folders onto discs or a networked folder.

Once you have added the songs to the iTunes libraries on each computer, you need to authorize the computers with the same iTunes Music Store account information. Just double-click any purchased song in iTunes, and enter your iTunes Music Store user name and password when prompted. You’ll need to have Internet access on each computer. When this is done, you’ll be able to use the music on all three computers, and on all three iPods. Note that you can have up to five computers authorized for your iTunes Music Store account.

Apple quotes the capacities of the current iPod lineup as:-
shuffle – 512MB (120 songs) or 1GB (240 songs)
nano – 1GB (240 songs), 2GB (500 songs) or 4GB (1,000 songs)
5G – 30GB (7,500 songs) or 60GB (15,000 songs)

The number of music files you will be able to fit on a given iPod will depend on three factors. Mostly, it will depend on the average track length of your MP3s and on the bit rate at which they are encoded. To a lesser extent, it will also depend on if your MP3s/AACs are encoded CBR (constant bit rate) or VBR (variable bit rate). Generally speaking, all other things being equal, VBR MP3s will be smaller than CBR MP3s.

The number of MP3s that Apple quotes as fitting on each model iPod are based on the following assumptions: 128 Kbps CBR encoded AACs with an average track length of four minutes each.

If you can only fit 140 songs on a 4GB iPod mini and are dissatisfied, you most likely picked the wrong compression method for your songs. Apple assumes that you will save your music files as 128kbps AAC or MP3 files, but iTunes gives you a variety of larger filesize options that can dramatically reduce the number of songs an iPod can hold. You may have seen “Apple Lossless” as a choice; this is most likely to create the 140-song problem. Our simple advice would be to set iTunes’ preferences for Encoding to encode files as 192Kbps MP3, or 160Kbps AAC, select all of your songs at the same time, and right click (PC) or control-click (Mac) to select “Convert Selection to…”? MP3 or AAC. The new files you create will most likely fit on your iPod and leave room to spare.

Alternately, it’s possible that some (but not all) of your music is uncompressed, or that you use your iPod as a hard disk as well. If you have other files on your iPod, there is less room available for music. You can read more about using the iPod as a hard disk in this article.

This only occurs on tracks where the Compressor’s release time parameter has been automated. The internal scaling and range for the Compressor’s release time has been changed for better overall performance, which can lead to a slight change in sound in this one situation. Either delete the automation for the parameter and find a constant value that works for the track, or rerecord the automation in Logic Pro 8.
