For iMovie ’09 users, update to version 8.0.4 or later.

For iMovie ’08 users, in order to get your footage properly oriented in iMovie, make sure to hold the phone or iPod nano horizontally with the home button or click wheel on the right side (as shown in the images above).

For footage that has already been recorded on your iPhone 3GS or iPod nano (5th generation), use iMovie’s Rotate feature to correctly orient the video in the iMovie viewer.

Summary

This article is about adverse issues experienced by customers who have made unauthorized modifications to the iPhone OS (this hacking process is often called "jailbreaking"). Issues that have been encountered include instability, disruption of services, and compromised security.

Products Affected

iPhone, iPod touch, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPod touch (2nd generation)

As designed by Apple, the iPhone OS ensures that the iPhone and iPod touch operate reliably. Some customers have not understood the risks of installing software that makes unauthorized modifications to the iPhone OS ("jailbreaking") on their iPhone or iPod touch. Customers who have installed software that makes these modifications have encountered numerous problems in the operation of their hacked iPhone or iPod touch. Examples of issues caused by these unauthorized modifications to the iPhone OS have included the following:

Device and application instability: Frequent and unexpected crashes of the device, crashes and freezes of built-in apps and third-party apps, and loss of data.

Unreliable voice and data: Dropped calls, slow or unreliable data connections, and delayed or inaccurate location data.

Disruption of services: Services such as Visual Voicemail, YouTube, Weather, and Stocks have been disrupted or no longer work on the device. Additionally, third-party apps that use the Apple Push Notification Service have had difficulty receiving notifications or received notifications that were intended for a different hacked device. Other push-based services such as MobileMe and Exchange have experienced problems synchronizing data with their respective servers.

Compromised security: Security compromises have been introduced by these modifications that could allow hackers to steal personal information, damage the device, attack the wireless network, or introduce malware or viruses.

Shortened battery life: The hacked software has caused an accelerated battery drain that shortens the operation of an iPhone or iPod touch on a single battery charge.

Inability to apply future software updates: Some unauthorized modifications have caused damage to the iPhone OS that is not repairable. This can result in the hacked iPhone or iPod touch becoming permanently inoperable when a future Apple-supplied iPhone OS update is installed.

Apple strongly cautions against installing any software that hacks the iPhone OS. It is also important to note that unauthorized modification of the iPhone OS is a violation of the iPhone end-user license agreement and because of this, Apple may deny service for an iPhone or iPod touch that has installed any unauthorized software.

Summary

This article discusses the compatibility of applications purchased from the App Store for use with VoiceOver on iPhone 3GS.

Products Affected

iPhone 3GS, App Store applications

Applications must be written to support VoiceOver on iPhone 3GS. If an application you are using does not support VoiceOver, check the App Store for updates, or contact the developer of that application. To locate a developer’s support website, navigate to the App Store and search for the application. The developer’s website is listed on the app’s product information page.

Additional Information

If an application does not provide full VoiceOver support, VoiceOver may skip over certain screen elements or not speak them. This is because VoiceOver can only speak descriptions if the developer writes the application to support VoiceOver. If you’re unsure about VoiceOver support for a particular application or you experience unexpected behavior, contact the developer.

Summary

Learn about the operating temperatures and temperature management of iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS.

Products Affected

iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS

Operate iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS in a place where the temperature is between 0º and 35º C (32º to 95º F). Low- or high-temperature conditions might temporarily shorten battery life or cause the device to temporarily stop working properly.

Store iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS in a place where the temperature is between -20º and 45º C (-4º to 113º F). Don’t leave the device in your car, because temperatures in parked cars can exceed this range.

If the interior temperature of the device exceeds normal operating temperatures, you may experience the following as it attempts to regulate its temperature:

The device stops charging

Display dims

Weak cellular signal

Temperature warning screen appears with the message "iPhone needs to cool down before you can use it" (see image below)

This message appears when the operating temperature has become too hot. This is a safety mechanism that protects the components of your device. If this message appears, you should turn the device off, move it to a cooler environment, and allow it to cool before resuming use.

Note: When this message appears, the device may still be able to make emergency calls.

Some conditions and activities that may activate the Temperature warning message:

Leaving the device in a car on a hot day.

Leaving it in direct sunlight for extended amounts of time.

Using certain applications in hot conditions or direct sunlight for long periods of time, such as GPS tracking in a car on a sunny day or listening to music while in direct sunlight.

Safety Standards:

iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS comply with the safety standard for Safety of Information Technology Equipment, IEC 60950-1.

This safety standard has been adopted by many countries and is referred to as the following:

UL 60950-1 in the United States

CSA 60950-01 in Canada

EN60950-1 in Europe

AS/NZS 60950:1 in Australia and New Zealand.
