MacBook Air: How to use Remote Disc to share DVDs or CDs on a Mac- or Windows-based computer

To install Remote Disc on a Mac or Windows-based computer:

- Insert the MacBook Air Mac OS X Install Disc 1 and run DVD or CD Sharing Setup.
- If you are using a Windows-based computer (Windows XP Service Pack 2 or later) proceed to step 5.
- If you are using a Mac-based computer (Mac OS X 10.4.10 or later), go to System Preferences and click the Sharing Icon.
- Select the checkbox labeled DVD or CD Sharing.
Note: If you want to require permission before others can use the optical drive on the computer, select the option called "Ask me before allowing others to use my DVD drive." See the screen shots below for Mac OS X Tiger 10.4.10 and Mac OS X Leopard. - If using a Windows-based computer, make sure you have installed DVD or CD Sharing in step 1, then click the Start button in the lower left of the screen as shown below.
- Click Control Panel to access your system preferences as shown below.
- Once in the Control Panel, click DVD or CD Sharing Option as shown below.
- DVD or CD Sharing must be selected (as shown below) in order to use the optical drive from your MacBook Air. If you want to require permission before others can use the optical drive on the computer, select the option called "Ask me before allowing others to use my DVD drive."







Once the software is installed and you have enabled DVD or CD Sharing, go to your MacBook Air, open the Finder and select Remote Disc from the menu on the left. There you will see the computer that has DVD or CD Sharing enabled.
