iTunes 8.2 restores all Contacts and Calendar data to the device rather than selected groups for Contacts or selected Calendars
Symptoms
When restoring iPhone or iPod touch using iTunes 8.2 from a backup file in which selected groups for Contacts and/or selected Calendars were chosen during the backup, iTunes will restore the device by syncing all Contacts and Calendar data to the device.

iPhone, iPod touch, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iTunes 8 for Mac, iPod touch (2nd generation)
Resolution
Update to iTunes 9 or later.
