How do I copy iTunes AAC files to a non-iTunes mobile phone?

The iTunes Music Store sells its songs in a Protected AAC format that adds restrictions to files which use the otherwise-normal AAC compression format. Unless you’re using an iTunes-compatible phone, you can’t easily play those tracks. There are ways to get around this, but doing any of them could violate the iTunes Music Store Terms of Sale you agreed to by purchasing music. The least objectionable is to burn your Protected AAC files to an Audio CD and then re-import them into unprotected MP3 format. The resulting files will be playable on a non-iTunes phone.

I do not have much free disk space on my Mac. Is it possible for me to have more MP3s on my iPod than I have in iTunes on my Mac? If so, how do I do this?

Yes, this is possible. You will first want to turn off auto-sync in iPod Preferences in iTunes (with your iPod attached to your Mac, select it in the source list, and then click the iPod icon button on the lower right).

Then, in iTunes, manually copy over MP3s from your iTunes library to your iPod. Once the MP3s are copied over, delete them from your iTunes library & delete them off of your Mac. By turning auto-sync off, the next time you connect your iPod to your Mac, it will not try to make your iPod look exactly like your iTunes MP3 library. So, iTunes won’t delete the tracks off of your iPod that are no longer on your Mac & no longer in your iTunes library.

Then import (or rip and encode) the next batch of MP3s you want to put on your iPod, manually copy these MP3s to your iPod in iTunes, then delete them out of your library and off your Mac. Repeat until you have all the MP3s you want on your iPod (or until your iPod is full!).

I don’t use MMJB anymore, I’ve switched to another program. Do I still need MMJB, or the iPod Manager software?

No, you don’t. You can uninstall all remnants of those programs and it’s recommended that you do. When uninstalling MMJB, it is very important to uninstall the MMJB iPod Plugin before uninstalling MMJB. Then uninstall the iPod Manager. You can and should leave the iPod Software Updater program installed in case you need to Restore the iPod.

iPhoto ’08: Viewing videos in iPhoto ’08 on Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard may need QuickTime 7

Symptoms

If you have upgraded to Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard and you use iPhoto ’08,* playing videos from within iPhoto by double-clicking them may not cause them to play. You will need to install QuickTime 7 (an optional install from the Snow Leopard Install Disc) in order to continue viewing videos in your iPhoto library.

*Note: Watching videos in iPhoto ’09 (version 8.0.4 or later) can be done without any additional installs of QuickTime.

To install QuickTime 7 from your Snow Leopard Install Disc:

Insert your Snow Leopard Install disc into your computer.
Once the installer opens, double-click on the Optional Installs folder:

Select the option for QuickTime 7 then click Continue to start the installation.

iTunes 9: Font Text is incoherent or appears in a different language

To resolve this issue in Windows:

Update to the latest version of iTunes by choosing Help > Check for Updates.
Search your fonts folder (C:\Windows\Fonts) for third-party fonts.
Locate all third-party fonts by sorting the view order by Last Modified to see which fonts have been installed since your operating system was installed. All fonts installed after your operating system was installed are third-party fonts.
Prevent all third-party fonts from loading by moving them to a new location, such as another folder on your hard drive. Note: To learn how to remove a font in Windows, or return to the default fonts that Windows ships with, see How to install or remove a font in Windows.
Restart your computer after changing the contents of the font directory.

Logic Pro/Express 8: Logic may quit unexpectedly when adjusting some Apple Audio Unit plug-ins with Mac OS X v10.6

You may notice Logic Pro 8 and Logic Express 8 quit unexpectedly when you click the Details disclosure triangle on Apple Audio Unit plug-ins on Mac OS X v10.6.

Resolution

Follow these steps to work around this issue:

Open GarageBand and insert the Apple Audio Unit on a track.
Make the desired adjustments in the plug-in interface and save it as a preset.
Open Logic and load the plug-in preset.

Notes:

Logic 8 has not been tested with Mac OS X v10.6.
Logic 9 is not affected by this issue.
The following Apple Audio Units have a Details disclosure triangle and are potentially affected by this issue:

Logic Pro/Express: Reset Setting menu option may not work with Audio Unit plug-ins

The Reset Setting menu item in the setting drop-down menu may have no effect with some Audio Unit plug-ins.

To resolve the issue:

Load a fresh instance of the plug-in, to be sure all the settings are in their default state.

Logic Pro/Express 9: Some values for EXS instrument parameters appear to be different than in Logic 8

Symptoms

When you load projects created in Logic 8 into Logic 9, some parameters in the EXS 24 plug-in appear to be different. If you load an EXS instrument or channelstrip created in Logic 8 into a new Logic 9 project, the same issue occurs.

Resolution

This issue is cosmetic; the sound of the affected EXS instruments is not changed from Logic 8, but some parameters display incorrectly in Editor view. If you need to work with the affected parameters, click the View button in the EXS 24 interface and choose Controls.
